Modi’s rise, UP violence inter- related: A B Bardhan

New Delhi: Communist Party of India ( CPI) on Sep 18,2013 exhorted the Muslim community to side with the secular forces in the country to defend secularism and social harmony saying that the naming of Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and communal holocaust in Western UP are inter- related developments.

“ These two developments are part of the BJP’s well- planned electoral strategy aimed at reaping harvest in the ensuing general elections,” CPI veteran A B Bardhan said in an interview to UNI.

Bardhan also impressed upon the Samajwadi party to correct its” bhool”( Mistake)and take urgent measures to restore confidence of the minorities, reestablish its credentials of secularism and good governance.

The CPI veteran maintained that that the two developments had cast their shadow on the political scenario and would bring about far reaching consequences for the country.

Putting the developments into perspective, he said these  had demonstrated beyond doubt that the RSS had now the tightened its grip over the BJP and that its dictates had to be complied with under all circumstances.

These also showed that the as the Lok Sabha polls were drawing nearer, the BJP had become” bekrar( impatient) and it has decided  that only the aggressive Hindutava  could fetch it some more seats.

Besides, Mr Modi, in an attempt to present himself a secularist and development- oriented, he was  managing some people coming in his rallies clad in burquas and  wearing skull caps to show that the minorities are also with him.

He said the people had yet not forgotten the 2002 Gujarat massacre while Modi and the BJP were trying to make them forget the same by beating drums about his development model.

On the other hand he said the BJP was trying its best to en cash on the people’s disillusionment with the Congress led UPA government’s failure to contain sky rocketing prices of essential commodities, downfall of economy and all prevailing corruption.

He said it is true that  now there is  ”the little” possibility of the UPA returning to power at the Centre in 2014 as the people have developed great dislike and disdain for its rule”.

“ The BJP and the Sangh Parivar want to en cash this people’s anger for political benefit, but they are underestimating the roots of secularism in our country. Countrymen see Modi as the one who divides the people, so they will not accept him as their prime minister.” He said.

The CPI veteran said all the more it had also be noted that the BJP has no worthwhile existence in the Southern and Eastern states. So they will not succeed in forming a government at the Centre despite their hard try.

At present only two small parties- the Akali Dal and the Shiv Sena are with the BJP while during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government it led  a 22 party coalition.” So therefore the dream of Modi and the BJP will remain unfulfilled.”

He said these two developments did not augur well for the minorities in the country.” For them there is only one option now that they should join the secular forces. In this task the Left parties will have a great role to play. They will definitely unite all  such forces on a single platform.”

On  Akhilesh Yadav government’s failure to contain communal violence that claimed 48 innocent lives, over 100 seriously injured and led to displacement of 40,000 people and devastation of property worth million of rupees and displacing thousands of others, said it might have initially imagined that the communal tension, spread by the BJP, would help them politically.

“ But the tension was so deep and that it was allowed to increase to the extent that the minorities were forced to flee their homes and lands to save their lives. The incompetence of the Samajwadi government has caused great anguish among the Muslim community, Bardhan added.
