CPI Strongly Decries Murderous Attempts on Govind Pansare, Uma Pansare
The Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has
issued the following statement today condemning the cruel and wanton
attempts to kill Comrades Govind Pansare and his wife Uma Pansare.
The Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India strongly
condemns the murderous moves of the communal forces helped by other
vested interests against Comrade Govind Pansare, Secretary of the CPI
Central Control Commission and former secretary of the Maharashtra State
Council of CPI and his wife Uma Pansare, a leader of women’s movement,
hoping to stifle the democratic, progressive and saner voices. The party
warns these forces to desist from such murderous attacks or face the
consequences. They were shot at when both were on their usual morning
stroll in their home town of Kolhapur. The 83-year old Govind Pansare
hit by bullets in his chest and neck is still not out of danger and is
struggling for his life in a Kolhapur hospital.
Comrade Govind
Pansare was under threat from the communal divisive forces over his
latest move to organize a discussion meeting of a book on the slain
chief of Mahrashtra state anti-terror squad Hemant Karkare: ‘Who killed
Hemant Karkare?’ It may be recalled here that in late October 2008, the
ATS arrested eleven suspects, all alleged Hindu terrorists, including a
VHP leader Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, Swami Amritananda alias Dayanand
Pandey, a retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay and a serving Army officer Lt
Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit. The anti Karkare forces had warned Com
Pansare of dire consequences if he would hold the widely publicised
function for the discussion of the book and now it is clear that these
forces had stooped down to such level of inhuman act when the function
turned out to be a grand function.
Com Govind Pansare in his six
decades of active political life has led the struggles of farmers,
sugar cane growers and for the trade union rights of workers. He is a
prolific writer on contemporary issues and has fought for the cause of
dalits, backward and marginalized sections of society. He has also
authored more than two dozen popular books. Also Com Pansare a
prominent highly acclaimed figure in the state had been leading an
agitation against Toll tax. A prominent advocate himself, he had also
carved out a special place among the members of the legal fraternity
with his commitment and deep grasp of the Indian situation. The
interests of profit along with communal forces are out to wipe out
pro-people saner elements from Indian soil. Rationalism, scientific
temper, inclusive growth and the exploited masses at larges will finally
win and no force on earth will be able to stifle them.
